The Family Systems Institute offers group supervision for clinical, workplace and organisational teams as a way of bringing systems thinking to life in their clinical or workplace context. The FSI has a long history of providing organisational supervision for those in the helping professions as well as leadership and management, offering online or in-person supervision for those in the health system, NGOs, and private organisations.
Murray Bowen described a shift to thinking about the relationship system being like “moving from the playing field to the top of the stadium to watch a football game. The view from the top of the stadium makes it possible to see broad patterns of movement and team functioning that are obscured by the close-up view. It is easier to see the team as a unit from this perspective. This is no way detracts from the value of the individual orientation. In fact, the distant view enhances the close-up view.”
(Bowen, 1978, Family Therapy in Clinical Practice, p.25)
The goal of a family systems approach to supervision is to help people shift their thinking and consider the broader relational context in which their clinical or workplace dilemmas are situated and how they can manage themselves and direct their energies effectively in this context. Whether it is presenting a clinical case and thinking about the family unit and the broader service context, or a leadership team thinking about workplace interactions and culture, by helping individuals taker a broader view and then think about their own role and responsibility in this context, family systems theory offers a unique supervision approach.
Are you a clinical team looking for a suitable supervisor?
Our supervisors offer regular, structured supervision programs that are available either in-person or online for clinical groups. An experienced supervisor will develop a supervision contract with your team based on your learning goals and create a confidential space where cases or workplace dilemmas can be presented and discussed using a family systems lens. Your supervisor will work with your team to encourage keeping abreast with best practice, research and self-care.
Clinical supervision with a family systems lens encourages clinicians to consider clients in the context of their relationship and environmental systems, as well as the providing opportunity for the therapist to grow in their own awareness as a therapist reflecting on how they position themselves as a helper with their clients in this process.

Is your team looking for an external supervisor to help promote leadership or team functioning?
Supervision with the Family Systems Institute aims to provide in-depth reflection on issues affecting workplace functioning in order to develop professionally and personally towards achieving and sustaining a high quality of service.
Because family systems theory is primarily a theory about human behaviour and functioning, it has been applied for decades to thinking about relationship interactions in the workplace and how leaders and workers can make efforts to manage their own anxiety and work on their own emotional maturity (differentiation of self) in the context of relationships.
Workplace supervision affords a unique opportunity for teams who are interested in thinking about growing leaders in emotional maturity, managing complex interpersonal interactions well, and thinking about team functioning.
