The aim of Year 1 Clinical Family Systems Supervision Groups is to assist participants to integrate new knowledge in an environment of collaborative learning and reflection. Drawing on their knowledge of family systems and guided reading material provided, participants are asked to formulate hypotheses and present their thinking about clinical cases using family systems theory’s concepts and main assumptions. A key aspect of the clinical supervision program is clinicians increasingly reflecting on the self of the therapist, noticing their triggers and sensitivities to clients and where they are vulnerable to losing objectivity (taking sides).
A reading and discussion component is part of this group, covering themes of family life cycle, culture, gender, and social contexts relevant to the clinical process. Pre-reading covers the clinical approach utilising Bowen family systems theory. The 5 sessions will prioritise couple and family cases, but will also consider cases involving family systems work with an individual. Strict codes of confidentiality will apply.
Group format and cost
Clinical Supervision Groups have a maximum of 6 participants and are supervised by an accredited AAFT Clinical Supervisor with the FSI. Each group has five 2-hour sessions and is held online.

Conditions of enrolment in Year 1 Clinical Supervision Groups
The aim of Year 2 Clinical Family Systems Supervision Groups is to assist participants to integrate their thinking about family systems theory with application to cases in an environment of collaborative learning and reflection. These groups provide the opportunity for a live supervision component with participants presenting audio / video examples of their clinical sessions for reflection and discussion. Live supervision provides the opportunity to further grow in awareness of self as a therapist, and to reflect on the application of theory in practice. Pre-reading for each session continues to provide a strong theoretical foundation for the supervision group. Strict codes of confidentiality will apply.
Group format and cost
Clinical Supervision Groups have a maximum of 6 participants and are supervised by an accredited AAFT Clinical Supervisor with the FSI. Each group has five 2.5-hour sessions and is held online.
Cost: $750 plus GST
Conditions of enrolment in Year 2 Clinical Supervision Groups
Anyone is welcome to join a Year 1 and Year 2 Clinical Supervision Group if you have the required 6 hours of demonstrated engagement with FSI activities and are a practicing clinician. If you are interested in pursuing further training in family systems theory with the Family Systems Institute, these Clinical Supervision Groups count as 21 hours (per group) of RPL activity toward a Certificate Program. Completion of Clinical Supervision Groups Year 1 and Year 2 Groups is a requirement for the certificate programs. Find out more about the RPL system for core programs here.

The required criteria of 6 hours of engagement with the FSI / Bowen theory prior to enrolment in one of these groups provides a strong platform for participants to engage with supervision groups.
